Connie Smith, born in 1941 in Elkhart, Indiana, is one of the greatest female singers in country music and probably the most underrated singers of all genres.  Unlike other country singers such as Loretta, Dolly, and Tammy, Connie decided not to pursue mega-stardom.  Instead, she would slow her career down in the late 60’s to balance it out with family and faith.  She has received numerous praise from her peers as well as awards and an induction into the Country Music Fall of Fame.

An interesting note, in 1969, future country musician/singer/ songwriter Marty Stuart, who was 12 at the time, saw Connie play at a fair.  After getting an autograph and a picture with her, Marty would tell his mother that someday he would marry Connie.  28 years later, he did just that, despite the 17 year age difference and that fact that Connie swore never to marry again.  They are still married to this day. connie-marty-stuart-marriage-gallery

This was Connie’s first album and it is a masterpiece.  Released in 1965, it would reach #1 on the country charts.  All twelve songs showcase Connie’s sweet country voice.  High points for me include the album’s hit single “Once a Day”, “Then and Only Then”, “Tiny Blue Transistor Radio”, and ” I Don’t Love You Anymore”.DSCN2368

I had a hard time deciding between songs to post but ultimately went with “I Don’t Love You Anymore”.conniesmith_profile
